We are committed to a policy of equal opportunities for all applicants for either employment or funding, our grant holders and our employees. As established in the Equality Act 2010 it is unlawful to discriminate against anyone on the grounds of a 'protected characteristic'.
As an employer we are committed to:
- eliminating unjustified discrimination
- equality of opportunity and good relations between employees
- encouraging diversity throughout our workforce.
As an organisation we promote and value equality, diversity and inclusion. We recognise the need to recruit employees, grant holders and students from the widest possible applicant pool, and acknowledge the benefits that a diverse population can bring.
The potential rewards of diversity are highlighted in the research councils' Statement of Expectations for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (UKRI website) which sets out the commitment required from institutions to ensure that the best potential researchers from a diverse population are attracted into research careers. The research councils will continue to deliver against their action plan launched in 2016 (PDF, UKRI website).
We are working as part of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group to refresh these plans, building up the good progress already made, and will also update our own implementation plan to sit alongside the UKRI action plan with some ESRC specific actions.
