These terms and conditions apply to all media training courses provided by ESRC. For the purpose of these terms and conditions:

  • 'we' means the ESRC provider who will provide the service
  • 'you' means the learner (researcher or PhD student) receiving the service.

You must be ESRC or AHRC-funded to be eligible to attend the media training. Where a course is full, individuals will be placed on a reserve list.

How to sign up

To sign up for a course, you must complete and submit an online booking form. Places will be given on a first-come first-served basis.

When you complete the booking form, you must tick the box to confirm that you have read these terms and conditions. Applicants who do not tick this box will have their applications returned.

Once your place on the course is confirmed, you will be expected to attend the entire course. The course normally lasts from 09:00 to around 16:00-16:30, so please make sure your schedule allows you to attend the full course. A delegate who arrives late or has to leave early is disruptive to other attendees.

Course content

We will send an agenda and directions to the venue with your course confirmation letter.

Payment for the course

The ESRC is publicly funded via the government's science budget. We set aside a limited amount of money every year to provide training for researchers, therefore there is no charge to attend the training course. However, please refer to the cancellation policy below.

Travel and accommodation

We will not pay for travel and accommodation. Please refer to your own travel department for assistance if required.

Your right to cancel

Once you have signed up for a course, you have up until 20 working days before the day of the course to cancel. If you wish to cancel you must notify us by emailing

Cancellations and no-shows

Any cancellations or no-shows occurring after the stated times above will result in your department or investment being informed and invoiced for the full cost of the training course which you have signed up for unless you can provide the name and details of a substitute ESRC-funded student or researcher to take your place. Preference must be given to ESRC-funded PhD students and researchers, however if you are unable to find an ESRC-funded student or researcher, a non-ESRC funded student or researcher will be accepted.

If you cancel within the cancellation period and are unable to provide any substitute, your department or investment will be charged a cancellation fee of £195 per person.

Impact and feedback

Due to the growing importance of impact we are required to report and evaluate all activities undertaken.

We will send feedback forms to you after your media training. We use the information to monitor if the requirements of our researchers and PhD students have been met. We would be grateful if you can keep us updated on how you are applying the skills you have learned.
